MEET OUR AMBASSADORS...

Meet Chris Marshal

Christopher Marshall is an IFMGA/AMGA Mountain Guide.  Originally from New England, Chris has found his home in the mountains of the west.  He has been guiding and instructing since 2006 on rock, snow, and ice with a thirst for exploring the unknown.  Professionally, aside from guiding, he is and instructor and examiner for the American Mountain Guides Association and in the Professional Avalanche track in the US.  A believer in standards, he pushes students to be better and to rise above, with the hope of inspiring the new generation to take pride in their pursuits, and to strive to be better than the minimum standard.  While he often chuckles when people ask where he lives, the nomadic nature of guiding lets him travel and enjoy the variety that mountains have to offer; skiing steep couloirs, endless jams on desert splitters, alpine ridgelines, and sinking tools into frozen waterfalls, you can find Chris smiling and sharing the mountain stoke.

Q1 Your favorite thing to do while wearing 30 SECONDS OUT?

Push myself hard in the mountains.  30 Seconds Out inspires me to dig deep and to keep pushing through the mental and physical pain of big days. Self-reliance is the inspiration to be better and to not take the easy or comfortable way.

Q2 Who or what inspires you?

Mark Twight’s essays and thoughts towards alpinism and life in the mountains have been an inspiration for many years and consistently remind me of what is important at the core.

Q3 A song you never get sick of listening to?

Mater of Puppets by Metallica from the S&M Album.  That would have been a rad concert to witness- heavy metal played with the San Francisco Symphony.

Q4 What's your next goal, personally or professionally?

I’ve recently gotten into bikepacking and have some personal goals there.  Bikepacking is a pursuit where I can challenge myself mentally and physically through big days with plenty of type 2 fun.  I’m working on designing bike packing routes through remote areas that aren’t currently frequented by mountain bikers.  To design a worthy route to share with the bikepacking community, it takes significant time to pour over trail maps, satellite imagery, and thinking about a route design that is challenging and links terrain together in an elegant way.  The next step is to go out and ride these routes and see if they are any good!

In the mountains, I would like to continue to add to my list of first ascents and ski descents, as well as ticking off some classics.

Q2: WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Jesus. My dad. One of my mentors/workout buddies is a former Team guy from teams 1 and 7, he plays a huge role in my life and teaches me to never quit and always push no matter what. My good buddy is also a commander in the Navy. Pretty much all of my buddies, and people who are trying to actively push themselves in life. I like seeing people seek to find more in life while helping others.

Q3: A SONG YOU NEVER GET SICK OF LISTENING TO?

I listen to so much music, music drives me in life. Country, metal, and hip-hop are generally my go-to genres of music. It depends on what I am doing in life. If I'm out on a road trip, it's a lot of country music. Flying tends to be metal. Snowboarding, dirt bike riding, and wakeboarding is hip hop music. Yet"Five Finger Death Punch, Under and Over It"never gets old.

MEET KARIN POCOCK

Karin Pocock grew up on the west coast of Canada in Steveston, BC a small fishing community on Lulu Island near Vancouver, BC. She spent much of her early life backcountry skiing and mountain biking the North Shore mountains and climbing the granite of Squamish, BC.

Since then, she’s spent most of the past 20 years as a working guide, ski patroller, and avalanche forecaster bouncing between BC, Alberta, and Colorado seeking diverse experiences in work and play. These days Pocock calls Blue River, CO home. She directs professional programs for Silverton Avalanche School and works a fairly full-time schedule as a rock, ski, and mountain bike guide. When not working, you can find her ultra-distance bikepack racing, on trails such as the Colorado Trail, or just enjoying the stillness of the desert after a full day of splitter-crack climbing. She’s always hunting the quiet moments, big skies, good company, and an excellent soundtrack to life.

Pocock is inspiring and embodies a TSO woman, no weak shit. We are stoked to be supporting someone who is committed to teaching the generations after her, she is a Jane of all trades when it comes to guiding. If there is one thing you need to know about her is that she is an utter badass.

Q1: YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WHILE WEARING 30 SECONDS OUT?

Just about anything. Feeling comfortable and steazy at the same time is what I seek in all activities. From teaching a certification program to chilling after a long ride, I always feel like 30 Seconds Out has me covered.

Q2: WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Anyone who is going full send on life. I think of the perspective shifts that have come from ultra-distance bike racing, my view of what’s uncomfortable has changed. Every time I look at the “no weak shit” sticker on my laptop I think of the first time I rode for 35+ hours and how that caused a paradigm shift. We all have more in us than we think.

Q3: A SONG YOU NEVER GET SICK OF LISTENING TO?

Girls by Slow Magic

Q4: WHAT IS YOUR NEXT GOAL, PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

I’d like to complete the bike-packing Triple Crown in a single year in 2024 or 2025.

Meet Steve Raethel

Steve was born in California. He grew up there, all up and down the east coast of Australia, back to California, and finally Hawaii before joining the Air Force. Having moved 26 times before Steve joined the military, he was always on the verge of something new and exciting, and so getting used to being "30 Seconds Out" almost came as second nature. After entering the military and becoming a Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) Specialist, knowing about time on target (60 seconds plus or minus) was huge. Going to airborne school and military free-fall school, "30 Seconds Out" took on a whole new meaning. That was when you had to be completely locked on, focused, and ready for game time, whatever the game of the day was. Now, being a military free-fall jump master, tandem master, and accelerated freefall instructor, giving his jumpers or students the "30 Seconds Out" signal means their lives are in his hands, and Steve has to know that when he sends them, they will be as safe as he can possibly make them. The rest is up to them!

It doesn’t matter if it’s military operations, big presentations and public speaking, learning new skills or getting back into something that you’ve forgotten just how good you were at it, the preparation is key. In SERE, They teach the 7 P’s - proper, prior, preparation prevents piss poor performance. And that rings true in everything you do throughout life. With the 7 P’s, it makes it so much easier to be able to smile and know that when 30 seconds out comes up as the time call, you’re ready.

Q1 Your favorite thing to do while wearing 30 SECONDS OUT?

100% it’s jumping out of airplanes, with other people. I am an instructor by trade, and I absolutely love both teaching and anything related to skydiving. Being able to share the stoke of skydiving with other people just makes the experience so much more rich - I fully believe that shared joy is double joy.

Q2 Who or what inspires you?

My biggest inspiration has got to be my kids. They’re 7 and 4, and are just giant sponges. They are so curious about the world, and are amazing reminders to always be curious, to never stop learning, to never grow up, and to be the eternal student. We should always strive to be better people, to continue learning about the world, and to make it a better place.

Q3 A song you never get sick of listening to?

I’m Alive by Kenny Chesney - it’s a chill song that is an amazing reminder that nothing is promised. Each day is something we should be grateful for and make the most of.

Q4 What's your next goal, personally or professionally?

My next goal is the homestead! Having spent over 22 years in the military, it’s time to move on and actually put down roots. I can’t wait for the 20+ acres of farmland, animals, gardens, and room for my family to keep doing gnarly things that requires them to be ready to be focused, locked on, and prepared for the 30 seconds out time call.
